The first step in the build is the assembly of the rotor head and blade
grips. This is a relatively straight forward procedure but requires the
use of 5.5mm box spanners to tighten down the feathering spindle nyloc
nuts. I didn't have any box spanners and there are no tools supplied in
the kit. I actually managed to do this with two pairs of long nose pliers
as my box spanners would not fit inside the blade grips.
It's important at this stage to know which bushing should go where so I
have included below a picture of the feathering spindle outside of a blade
grip with the bushings and bearings shown in their correct places. The
plastic bushings are the ones that should locate against the dampers in
the center of the rotor hub.
Care should be taken to make sure that the blade grip bearings are inserted
fully into the blade grips, otherwise you won't be able to do up the feathering
spindle nuts. I pushed the bearings into place using a large allen key
almsot equal in diameter to the blade grip bearings. |

In the bottom pictures above it's important to note that the feathering
spindle is beng shown without the blade grip just to show correct location
of bushings and bearings. In order to install the blade grips the bearings
and metal bushing are pushed down into the blade grip from the blade (not
hub) side. The plastic bushing is left on the feathering spindle to locate
between the blade grip and the dampener. The series of photos below show
the assembly of the blade grips and then the feathering spindle being inserted
into the rotor head and the blade grips added and screwed down into place
using the nyloc nuts. There is little to get wrong in this step other than
the bushings being the wrong way round or the blade grip bearings nor being
inserted fully into the blade grips. |
