The next step is installing the control linkages for the head. The sizes for the linkages specified in the manual are very close to being spot on. I only had to lengthen slightly the rods from the aileron control horns to the swashplate and also the ones from the elevator seesaw to the swashplate. It was in this part of the build that I discovered the first serious problem with the kit.

The balls (for ball links) in the kit are not very round and when looked at through a magnifying glass it is possible to see that a lip in the ball appears around where the hole has been drilled for the screw to go through. This lip and non-round shape causes a bind on the ball links when the ball link is at an angle to the ball (rather than in line with it). This affects the swashplate balls on the outer swash plate ring and also the balls on the elevator seesaw. The ball links bind and stick. The easiest fix I have found is to just replace these balls with spare balls I had from a T-Rex kit which don't have this problem. The T-Rex balls are slight larger than the ones from Ark so it's preferable to also use six T-Rex ball links to get a nice smooth running elevator and aileron movement.

I will raise this problem with one of the UK distributors for reporting back to Ark.

Update : 15/04/2005

Apparently this problem only affects very early kits, later versions do not suffer from this problem.
